VMware is looking for a Member of Technical Staff interested in joining the vSAN Performance Engineering R&D group. The team is primarily focused on the data path performance of vSAN, Data protection including bottleneck analysis and software architecture design and optimization for next generation hardware. The team is also engaged in building performance analytics solutions for VMware products. The candidate should be able to integrate performance considerations at the hardware, hypervisor, guest OS layers into an overall understanding of why various components of the storage software stack as well as various applications perform as they do, and then to communicate what is learned to the appropriate stakeholders. The position involves writing performance test plans, automating them, executing and analyzing the results and monitoring performance regressions on a daily/weekly basis. The job also expects you to look into the product code, do deeper performance analysis for individual features (such as data protection, encryption, deduplication & compression etc) and present insights of your analysis to the perf & dev engineers on further improving the performance. A Bachelors or Masters in Computer Science or related field
5+ Years of industry experience
Very good aptitude for performance engineering R&D and experience with performance benchmarks and methodology
Excellent programming skills with Python, C/C++
Solid understanding of CPU, memory, network, storage hardware and software subsystems, data protection as they relate to performance
Basic hypervisor and Linux system administration skills
Excellent analytical skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
B.S. in computer science, engineering or related field
5+ years of experience in performance engineering or software QA (specifically in workload automation and automation frameworks)
In-depth knowledge of Python
Strong OS fundamentals
In-depth knowledge of Linux internals or Windows Internals
System administration experience a must (Linux or Windows)
Familiarity with full stack development is a plus
Familiarity with Virtualization concepts
Hands-on experience using performance tools and benchmark
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Proven ability to work in a team
